Lactation Medicine Consults

Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine (BFLM) is a medical subspecialty. Providers who practice BFLM are trained in primary care (like pediatrics), and they have extra training in lactation. BFLM is the highest level of breastfeeding care: medical evaluations, diagnostic testing, and medication prescribing are all integrated into the consults.

Your breastfeeding journey.

Breastfeeding is different for everyone. It can be a challenge in the first hour of life or maybe as the milk comes in or maybe further down the road. You're welcome to ask for help at any point.

Milk supply evaluation.

Rule #2 - support mom's milk! Supply of breastmilk is a central consideration when it comes to lactation. Lactation Medicine Consults focus on this issue - medical evaluation of milk supply is neecessary.

Pumping.

This can be an adventure on its own! Your pump needs to fit like a bra needs to fit. Do you need to pump? Yes. No. Maybe sometimes. Pumps can cause problems - you need to discuss

Baby's growth.

Rule #1 - feed the baby! Breastfeeding is all about getting baby to grow. Nobody knows more about this than a pediatrician. Lactation Medicine Consults include and evaluation of baby's weight.

Latch and Positions.

Rule #3 - put it all together. Almost all dyads need some help with their positioning. The baby's latch is evaluated, and all Woven babies are checked for tongue tie. Nursing is a skill that takes time!

Mom's lifestyle.

Nutrition, sleep, medications, mental health, back-to-work, baby gear, social support are all factors for a lactating parent. Lactation Medicine is the only medical subspecialty that all of it.

Lactation consults are available for any age nursling and their caregivers. Both baby and mama will be scheduled/seen as patients.
