Induction of Lactation

If you are not pregnant, you can still make breastmilk. This goes for adopting parents, trans-moms, families using a surrogate. Re-lactation (making breastmilk after stopping for a bit) falls in this category as well. Call if you are interested!

Who can induce lactation?

Any adult can induce lactation. Typically, those who are interested are expecting a baby that is going to be adopted or born via surrogate. But everyone has breast glands, so anyone can lactate: birthing moms, non-birthing moms and trans-moms.

When do I start?

Please get in touch with Woven Pediatrics 6 months before your baby will arrive. If you are sitting with a baby in your arms right now, please call, we can discuss options and expectations!

Can I just start pumping?

Yes, some moms can just start pumping, and voila: milk! This will not work for most moms, especially if they have never been pregnant or were not assigned female at birth. Dr. Stephanie recommends an appointment.

How in the world?

Hormones and pumping. We use hormones to "fake" a pregnancy and prepare your breasts to make milk. You will need to do a good bit of pumping. Inducing lactation is a huge commitment, but you deserve the opportunity if it interests you!

Does this work?

Yes, slowly. As you start your journey to induce lactation at Woven Pediatric, Dr. Stephanie will assess your history and discuss the likelihood of success. Everyone is different.

What should I expect?

3 Visits:

#1: Discussion of the process, choosing the hormones. Timelines! (Virtual.)

#2: Starting to pump. (In person recommended.)

#3: Baby's here! Let's latch and see how it's going. (In person recommended.)
