Breast & Nipple Pain

Woven Pediatrics is one of the only places in Colorado where your lactation related breast and nipple pain can be evaluated, diagnosed and treated. Only providers with experience in breastfeeding and lactation medicine can manage problems like breast and nipple pain. (IBCLCs are not providers.)

Does breastfeeding hurt?

It is common (if not universal) for the latch to feel a little scrapy in the beginning - with a good latch, your nipples will adjust. After a few days, breastfeeding should NOT hurt! If you are having lasting nipple or breast pain, something is wrong. Woven Pediatrics can evaluate you and your baby - you deserve to know what is wrong!

What's mastitis?

Mastitis is an inflammatory condition of the breast. It starts when milk is not removed well enough. The body gets angry and sends blood flow, inflammation and swelling to the affected area. And it huuuuurts! Mastitis can usually be treated with conservative measures like ice and rest, but you deserve an appointment to determine why this happened in the first place.

I have a breast lump!

If you are worried about a lump in your breast, please get help. (Just call! Dr. Stephanie will help you.) Even if you are lactating, the lump could be something unrelated to milk! Breast lumps that persist need evaluation (possibly a mammogram).

Should I stop nursing?

Please, please, please do not make the decision to wean because of pain without discussing it! You and your baby deserve more! Weaning is usually way down the list of options. (But always an option!)

Dr. Stephanie would be happy to help you and your baby nurse comfortably!
